The Ricky's All Day Grill/Berardi Bros. Plumbing Jr Rookie Peterborough Tigers were crowned Champions in Bolton this weekend. The victory marked the 2nd tournament win of the season for the Tigers and with their perfect 5-0 record, stretched their unbeaten streak to 25 games.
The tournament featured 10 teams (4 AAA, 6 AA/A) and provided great competition. The Tigers beat Waterdown, Leaside White and Leaside Grey in the round robin before beating Leaside White in the semi-final and Halton Hills in the Final.
In the first round robin game vs Waterdown, the team was led on offense by Brett Crowley with two doubles and Cam Ryan who scored 3 runs. On defense, Crowley made a smart tag play at the plate to limit a Waterdown attack as the Tigers won 22-2. Crowley was named game MVP.
The second round robin game vs Leaside White proved to be a significant test for Peterborough. Leaside took a 6-4 lead into the 6th inning before Ayden Turner hit a 3 run homerun (his 2nd of the season) to give the Tigers the lead. In the bottom half of the 6th, Jack Philips made a leaping catch in center field and doubled off a runner at first base to stall the Leaside bats and secure the victory. Philips was named game MVP as Peterborough won 14-6.
The final game of the round robin saw the Tigers face Leaside Grey. Peterborough's bats came alive as Noah Stanley (2nd of the season) and Crowley (1st of the season) each hit homeruns. On defense, Beau Marshall and Stanley continued their impressive middle infield play as the team held Leaside to just 3 runs. The Tigers won 16-3 and clinched the #1 seed for Championship Sunday. Stanley was game MVP.
The 10 teams also participated in a Skills Competition Saturday afternoon. Peterborough won the 6 player Around the Horn throwing event with a team time of 17 seconds. The team also finished 1st (Ayden Turner), 2nd (Cole Cavanagh) and 3rd (Jack Philips) in the 30 player Longest Throw competition!
The Semi Final game was a rematch of Saturday morning as the Tigers took on Leaside White. This game had a little bit of offense, a little bit of defense and a lot of drama as the Tigers won 16-15 in extra innings. Leaside took a 4 run lead into the 7th inning where the Tigers rattled off 5 consecutive extra base hits to tie the game. In the bottom of the 7th, Leaside bounced back with a lead-off double, but it was quickly erased on a smart play by Parker Call and Marshall who caught the runner trying to take 3rd. This gave the Tigers momentum heading into extra innings where Thomas Dalliday hit a triple to score Philips and give the Tigers the lead. Dalliday later came in to score on a hit by Lucas Cavanagh to give Peterborough a 2 run lead. Tyler Crawford and Marshall made fly ball catches to clinch the win and a berth in the Final. Dalliday was named game MVP.
Peterborough faced off against Halton Hills for the Championship Sunday afternoon. The Tigers got solid infield defense with Marshall, Stanley and Crowley teaming up on a rally killing 6-4-3 double play in the 3rd. Jack Hatton (1st of the season) and Cole Cavanagh (3rd of the season) hit homeruns to lead the charge. Hatton finished with 5 RBI and made a great catch in left field to start the game. Alexandre Clement had 2 hits and scored 2 runs as the Tigers won 18-3. Hatton was named game MVP!
The Jr Rookie Tigers will continue their EOBA regular season this Wednesday in Oshawa and have a matchup against Whitby on Saturday, July 29th @ 12:30 (East City Bowl).
