The AAA Minor Mosquito Peterborough Tigers are Champions of the Tigers AAA Invitational Baseball Tournament, which took place this past weekend in Peterborough. The tournament featured 8 of the top 10 year old AAA baseball teams in Ontario. Peterborough beat Hamilton 7-1 in the Final to capture the title. Head Coach, Adam Crowley, said the tournament had an Ontario Championship feel to it. "We are proud of how our team competed this weekend against many of the best teams in Ontario. We were Ontario Champions in 2018 and this tournament had the same feel to it. Our group is excited to start off 2019 with such a great weekend of baseball."
The Tigers started the tournament with a 16-6 victory over Kitchener on Friday night. Cole Cavanagh got the win for Peterborough giving up just 4 hits in 3 1/3 innings while striking out 6. Lucas Cavanagh threw 2 2/3 innings in relief. Peterborough was led offensively by Beau Marshall who had 3 hits including a triple, 2 stolen bases and drove in 2 runs. Cole Cavanagh had a single, double, 2 RBI and was named game MVP.
In their 2nd game of the tournament, the Tigers had their first of two eventual meetings with a strong Hamilton Cardinals team. Hamilton stormed out to an early 5-0 lead and Peterborough could not rebound, falling 11-3 and setting up a must-win game on Saturday night with East York. The Tigers managed just 4 hits including a double from Jack Philips and RBI singles from Cole Cavanagh, Tyler Crawford and Marshall. Brett Crowley pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief, striking out 4 to earn game MVP.
Saturday night's must-win game vs East York was a complete effort from the entire Peterborough team. Jack Philips threw a complete game, scattering 6 hits while striking out 4 to earn the win as the Tigers won 14-2. Offensively, the team had 5 extra base hits. Ayden Turner led the way with 2 doubles and 3 RBI. Crawford also doubled while Marshall and Jack Hatton had triples. Every member of the Peterborough team reached base as the boys piled up 16 hits in the victory. The win gave Peterborough a berth in the semi-final on Sunday vs the undefeated North Toronto A's. Philips was named game MVP.
The semi-final game was a back and forth battle. The Tigers struck for 4 runs in the first inning before falling behind 7-6 after 4. In the top of the 5th, Peterborough took the lead, but could not hold on as North Toronto tied the game in the bottom of the 6th. 7 innings was not enough to settle this one as the teams went to extras. After a scoreless 8th inning, Noah Stanley led off the 9th getting hit by a pitch. Crowley singled him to 2nd and Cole Cavanagh moved both runners and reached base with a perfect bunt. That set the stage for Jack Hatton's bases clearing double to clinch the win for Peterborough. Crowley was named game MVP throwing 5 1/3 innings of 3 hit baseball with 5 strikeouts. Stanley pitched 3 innings and Reed Tighe saved the game in the 9th. Hatton, Marshall, Cole Cavanagh and Thomas Dalliday all reached base 3 times to spark the offense.
Waiting for Peterborough in the Championship Game was a rematch with Hamilton. The Tigers went back to the Cavanagh pitching duo who held Kitchener in check on Friday night. This time, Cole threw 3 innings of no hit ball and Lucas scatted 3 hits over 4 innings. Peterborough took a 2-1 lead into the top of the 7th where Marshall led off with a single. Philips then pushed a bunt passed a sprawling pitcher to the first baseman who dove and then threw wide of the bag allowing Marshall and Philips to score. In the same inning, Lucas drove in 2 with a 2-out double to extend the lead to 7-1. The Tigers held the Hamilton bats in check giving up just 3 hits in the game and striking out 4. Key defensive plays in the 7th by Lincoln Rose in left field and Stanley at second prevented a Hamilton rally as Peterborough earned the tournament victory. Lucas Cavanagh was named game MVP. Hatton was named tournament MVP.
