Become an Umpire

Kawartha Umpires Association 2024

An overview of the steps for Certification

1. Clinic Registration - FREE for Peterborough Umpires!

We will be covering the registration costs for all Peterborough umpires again in 2024. Other centres charge $30 - $100 for certification, but the KBUA is committed to recruiting and retaining all umpires with no registration fee. Here is a summary of the steps for certification in 2024.

  • go to the baseball Ontario website: https://www.playoba.ca/
  • Click on Umpires
  • Click on 2024 Umpire certification
  • Click on the link to register as a new or returning umpire (now managed thru OnDeck)
  • During your registration, please select Eastern Ontario Baseball Association / Peterborough Baseball Association as the local association.
  • Select your level (1, 2, or 3). If in doubt about your current level, please email umpire@baseballontario.com

2. Completing your Certification

  • To become an umpire requires two steps
  • The first is completion of online modules thru Baseball Ontario.
  • Once you register, you'll be provided with the online modules so you can complete these at your leisure
  • The second step is an on-field clinic called a Camp

3. On Field Camp - Saturday, May 4

The KBUA will be hosting a FREE on-field camp on Saturday, May 4 at Holy Cross High School in Peterborough. The camp is for both level 1 & 2 umpires and runs from 8:30am to noon. Registration is done online, and our camp has already been listed so you can signup today. The camp will be held in the gym so please bring appropriate indoor footwear and your mask (if you have one). The camp is a great opportunity to practice your skills & positioning and learn from Baseball Ontario Clinicians. It is mandatory to attend a camp in addition to completion of the online modules to obtain your certification. If you are unable to attend the Peterborough Umpire camp, you can attend any other camp in Ontario. But please note that other camps will likely have a charge that you will need to pay as they are run by different associations. Only the Peterborough camp on May 4 is free.

4. Scheduling

All schedules will be posted to horizon web ref in late April. We assign all games using horizon web ref so please make sure your profile is up to date, and update your availability calendar so we can assign you for games. High school baseball starts on May 1st and the PBA season starts shortly after.

5. Umpire Pay Rates

We have partnered with the PBA to increase the umpire pay rates for all levels of Peterborough baseball. Our rates are very attractive compared to other associations, and I'd like to thank the PBA for investing in our umpires. Below are the 2024 pay rates.

6. Do you know anyone interested in umpiring?

Umpiring is a great way to enjoy the game of baseball from a different perspective and earn cash for your hard work. We are always looking for new umpires to join our ranks and build on our reputation as the best umpire association in Ontario. Certification is free for all Peterborough umpires, so there's never been a better time to join the KBUA.
